Frequently Asked Questions

Newborn Photography

I’m concerned about the safety of my baby. Are you a qualified professional?
As a trained and experienced newborn photographer, the safety of your newborn baby is of THE utmost priority during your photo session. From the temperature of the room, gentle handling, skillful posing, sanitary practices and appropriate prop choices, everything about the newborn session is designed to be stress-free, safe and comfortable for both parent(s) and baby.

How old are newborns when they’re usually photographed?
Because this magically tiny time passes so quickly, newborns are best photographed between 7-14 days after their arrival.

How long will a newborn session take?
Newborn sessions typically last 3 hours or more, depending on how cooperative the little one is. Typically, working with them when they are enjoying a deep sleep best ensures a good variety of setups and poses

Do you have a studio or will you come to my home?
In-studio sessions take place within my quiet, private, main floor space on Dorchester Street in Sydney. Studio sessions offer a more controlled environment for posing and styling, with attention to thoughtfully create beautifully crafted images.

In-home sessions offer a more candid, true-to-life depiction of your new arrival in their everyday surroundings. Combined with a few posed images, in-home sessions may also be ideal for babies who may have a difficult time sleeping. Please inquire for details in choosing the right session for your new arrival.

How far in advance should we book our newborn session?
To ensure availability, I recommend booking your session at least 2-3 months in advance. A tentative date will be penciled in based on your due date. As soon as your little bundle arrives, please notify me within a day or two after delivery.

What should I bring?
Be prepared to nurse/feed a LOT during your session to encourage a deeply sleepy baby. You should also bring extra diapers, wipes, a pacifier (if you use one), snacks and a cool drink(s) for yourself, and any special blankets or props you wish to have incorporated into your session.

Can siblings and parents be incorporated into the session?
Newborns are delicate and require full attention. Young siblings are more than welcome to be a part of the session, butI ask that we arrange for the sibling portion to happen either at the beginning or end of your session where someone (family or friend) can pick them up or drop off according to their scheduled participation. Newborn photos with parents are definitely encouraged and will be scheduled at the beginning or end of the session as well.

What if my baby poops or pees on you or your equipment?!
Babies pee and poop a lot and on everything, including me. haha! Don’t be alarmed if this happens numerous times during our session. It comes with the territory. All props and blankets that are used get washed after each session.

Do you have props?
I offer a large variety of props, baskets, blankets and outfits. I will work with you either prior to your session or upon your arrival to choose your favorites in advance.

Can we bring our own props?
You are welcome to bring your own clothing or meaningful items as well. I ask that you please notify me in advance if you do, so that I can prepare and plan the styling of your session prior to your arrival.

How many photos do we get?
A typical newborn photo session results in approximately 20+ photos for you to choose from.

Does my baby have to be naked?
While naked-baby photos are adorable and capture the true essence of your newborn, nudity is not mandatory.

Do we get digital files?
Digital files are not included in the session itself, but individual files, digital bundles or full session discs can be purchased at an additional charge. A signed release will be provided for full print and duplication rights.

Do you offer canvas prints or framed enlargements?
I have a wide range of professional display and wall art products available in my Goodie Collection. Please inquire for details, pricing and information.

How long does it take to receive our photos?
Depending on scheduling and time of year, I normally aim to have your photo sessions complete and ready for viewing within 2-3 weeks after your session.

Wedding Photography

How much time should I set aside for photographs during the day?
While many of photographs are taken while the action is happening, I still need some time with the couple, as well as time set aside for family photographs. The average time allocated to cover bridal party images and family photographs is approximately 1-2 hours. Ideally, I would also love an additional 30 minutes to 1 hour for a mini-session with the couple. Prior to your day, timing and scheduling will all be discussed and planned out ahead of time to ensure we’re all on the same page and comfortable with the sequence of your day.

Do you take posed family images?
Absolutely. I strongly believe in family images being included in your wedding collection. Family sessions at your wedding are orchestrated to be quick, easy, and largely informal – with the goal to make them pleasant and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Can we give you a short list of photographs we want you to take?
Yes, of course. It is very helpful to know what important relatives and friends are coming to your day, as well as poses or locations that hold special significance to you and your family. I will do my best to accommodate any direction and feedback you can offer.

Can you hold my date for me?
To be fair to everyone I can’t “hold” a date without a retainer and a signed contract. I accept bookings on a first come/first served basis.

What is your payment schedule like?
A $300 retainer fee is required to book all wedding packages, with the remaining balance due 7 days prior to the big day. Arrangements can be made for payment installments upon request.

I have to cancel my wedding. Can I have my retainer back?
The retainer fee is non-refundable. The retainer guarantees that I will hold the date exclusively for you and once you’ve signed the contract I turn down all other commissions for that date.

How many photos will we get?
The number of photographs taken depends on many things; hours of coverage, number of guests/locations, etc. My bare minimum is 400 images for a wedding, but often it’s much, much higher!

How long does it take to get our photos?
Depending on summer scheduling and bookings, normally you’ll receive your proof book and goodies within 6-8 weeks of your wedding date, or sooner.

Are you the only photographer?
Yes, I am the sole primary photographer. Requests for a second photographer can certainly be accommodated. Please provide 3 months notice if a second photographer is required.

Should we feed you at the reception?
It would be really lovely if you did, but don’t feel obligated. It certainly doesn’t have to be the same as your sit-down meal (many caterers offer “vendor meals” as an option). Feeding me simply ensures I stay cheerful, mobile, and that I don’t faint from starvation. 🙂

If we run overtime, will you stay?
Absolutely. I’m pretty flexible with the cut-off time of weddings. If an extended amount of time is needed, I have an overtime rate of $100/hr and it goes into effect only with your approval that I continue coverage.

Are you insured?
Yes, I am. As a business owner, I pride myself on professional conduct and making sure both you and I are protected and covered. So, if Uncle Bob for example, has perhaps one too many “wobbly-pops” and knocks me over, my camera goes flying and crashes on the floor… you don’t have to sweat it. That’s what insurance is for! By the way, I also have back-up equipment with me at all times for such an occasion as well.

What kind of equipment do you use?
I use professional Canon cameras, lenses, and accessories and always carry back-up equipment at all times.

Children & Family Photography

What should we wear?
Solid colored, well-fitting clothing works best. Keep patterns or visible name brands or graphics to a minimum. We want full attention to be on your expressions and smiling faces. For family portraits, coordinating colors are often flattering, although not required. Above all—be yourself, be comfortable and wear what you would normally wear.

What if my children act up or are uncooperative?
Getting little ones to co-operate when you want them to, can be difficult sometimes — but photo sessions do not have to be stressful endeavors. I will typically work slowly with children at first, taking the time for a separate little one-on-one session for a few minutes to warm them up. This usually results in a playful connection where I’m able to read their behavior and temperament. It’s always best to work with their mood; so if they don’t feel like sitting still, let them run and play. The most successful sessions are ones where there is little to no direction to: “sit and smile at the camera”.

Can you recommend outdoor locations?
I sure can. I’ve photographed family sessions all over the island and can recommend many locations to best suite the look or style that you’re after, the size of your family, and/or age of your children.

Can we incorporate our family pets?
Yes, of course. I love animals and welcome the addition of furry friends into your family photos. Please let me know in advance if you’d like to incorporate your little buddies.

Do you have a studio location?
Yes, I do. I have a fully accessible, first floor, air conditioned studio in downtown Sydney. The address is Suite 100 at 58 Dorchester Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
How many photos do we get?
A typical child or family session results in approximately 30+ photos for you to choose from—although often, many more.

Do we get digital files?
Digital files are not included in the session itself, but individual files, digital bundles or full session discs can be purchased at an additional charge. A signed release will be provided for full print and duplication rights.
